Frisky beef

And no, I'm not talking about half a dozen hawt guys in jock straps, fanning me with palm fronds and feeding me bonbons. Because that would be too easy.

Okay, hold on a sec while I enjoy that image...

No, what I'm talking about is this infernal cold that has had us in a stranglehold for over a week now. If it's going to be this damn cold it needs to fucking snow. Oh but no, instead it freezes the water in the kitty trough so I have to thaw it out every morning so they don't die, and it freezes the stock tank so I have to go fill up the little tank - also so they won't die.

The bad thing is, now the cattle are absolutely certain that I am the most amazing creature on earth, because I make food and water happen whenever they are most desperate. So when they see me they practically stampede to see what my next great trick is going to be. The cold makes the silly critters all frisky and happy too, so now I have to be extra wary while I'm waiting for the stupid tank to fill up, so I don't get accidentally trampled by happy hamburger on the hoof. Tomorrow I am bringing the fly swatter with me - this cuteness shit has got to stop.

T-day

What an involved holiday weekend. Not a gigantic amount of activity, since we ended up coming home right after we did the meal action, but still - involved.

Had a nice visit with Viva and her hubby when we got into Lamesa. It's been quite a while since we've seen them, and as usual their place has new stuff and some construction going on. I got to see her new zippy bathroom (so jealous) and the great front steps. It looks like they're going to be extending their kitchen a bit, which I'm sure will be nice when it gets done. They also gifted us with a Ronco rotisserie, which I will probably break in in a week or two with... well something, haven't decided yet.

Then after that we went on to the in-laws' place. As usual we stayed at his brother's place, but this time said brother was actually there. Interesting evening involving some gambling lessons for 3 card poker (or whatever the hell it's called) and the usual amount of conversation that always seems to happen between the two of us. It's weird - I generally hate debating things, I don't care for argumentative discussion, but with the bro-in-law it just works. I can't explain it, but I can have a heated disagreement with the man and still enjoy the conversation. However, this time around I ended up the asshole and now he hates me. I don't see any point in getting into it here (not that I expect him to read this anyway, since he is done with me now) and I haven't figured out how or whether to react to it. Due to that he decided to leave early instead of staying, so he missed out on the T-day grubbage.

The next morning we were actually up and active earlier than noon, so we hit the K-Bob's earlier than we expected. Nice time, good food, and so so lovely to not have to do dishes afterwards. It was nice to get some time in with the ma-in-law and not have to worry about anything other than the visit.

Unfortunately it was snowing when we got up, and the snow got thicker through the meal. We've had this happen before at xmas, and when that happened we ended up having to plow the old car into a big drift in the back yard driveway just to have a place to get it off the road. We didn't want that to happen again, so we had to take off right after we ate. The snow held steady all the way through Lubbock and a ways north of that, but as we got closer to Muleshoe it thinned out until there was nothing but damp ground. Figures. We were supposed to drive down to Mineral Wells after dinner (or the next day, depending on how things timed out) and visit with RAM, and he had fixed up a whole meal for us. Poor guy. So now he has a freezer full of extra food because we got tricked by the snow.

It did snow again, on Friday and Saturday. It covered the ground both times, but melted off pretty quick. We're hoping for more, because we need every bit of wet we can get, but it's nice that it didn't just fuck with us and only dampen the ground.

All manner of visitors

We got to welcome a whole handful to Muleshoe this weekend. The Tornado and her beau dropped by on fri for the last leg of their big tour of the continental US. Mostly a sedate visit, they definitely needed to get a rest in (and some tacos from Leal's) after driving across the state to get here. Had a nice time and did some cookout and a couple rounds of bocce on sat before they had to move on along to get home by tue.

We had our professor friend come along on sat just as the two of them were getting ready to get on the road. More sedate weekend happenings really - just visiting and relaxing. And he just got back from Guatemala, so the hubby and I got to have the weekend hearing tales of our guests' travels. No, we hardly go anywhere.

But the big surprise was on sat, when we took the Tornado to peep out the dairy over next to the ponderosa place. Not only did we get to see them do the milking thing, we also got to watch a baby calf being born. It was a remarkably non-fwaga experience, even if the guy had to get the chains and drag the poor critter out. Now the hubby wants to get another baby calf for me to bottle feed. Ech.

Screwy Karma

Okay, get this. The hubby managed to get a day or two overdrawn on the vacation thing. These things happen. Afterwards, his boss decides to send him one of those passive aggressive type computer notes. Now I understand that being the boss you have to do that sort of thing, but the way he goes about it is kind of unnecessarily assy. Then, on Friday, karma comes around in one of those lose-lose fashions. See, said boss is a worse procrastinator than I could ever be. So bad, in fact, that he needed some help getting some work done before the October deadline. The deadline that comes after the deadline for late returns, which comes after the most common deadline in the business - April 15th. Yeah, that far behind.

And who does he go to for help? Why, the only person in the office who is likely to go out of his way to bust his ass simply because that is the way to get the job done. And his incentive was an extra week off, which has to be used by the end of the year, at the time of the year when time off is rare because tax season is ramping up. So the poor hubby had to drag his ass to the office to do work on the weekend, meaning that by Friday he will have worked 12 full days in a row. Now that is some bullshit right there. But it looks like we're either having a long Thanksgiving break, or we may end up using up the time down in Mineral Wells helping RAM out on account of he broke his foot. Either way, it will be a well earned break.

Damn the flies

So Friday I decide to throw a couple things into the fridge to thaw out so we can do the weekend cookout deal. Nothing major, just a couple steaks that we wanted to get rid of and a bag of scallops, plus a stack of frozen burgers, which we also want to get rid of. (No, that's not as nasty as it sounds. The hubby got some steaks from a different source than usual and they're not as good as the ones we usually get. It's not like they were all old and funky, just mediocre.) I've been on this strange day schedule the past couple of days (which I need to stay on for travel purposes, but that's a whole other story...) and waking up pre-dawn. We were both active before the sun even got up in the sky, and the hubby up and decides, out of nowhere, to invite a friend from Lubbock to come over for a cookout.

Little did I realize where this was going...

One invite turned into two, which turned into three, which turned into pretty much anybody we knew in the area. Now I like to have party time, but I don't care for spontaneous, put this shit together in a couple of hours, party time. But that's how it was gonna be.

Fortunately I already had some food prepped. Now I just had to throw shrimp into a bag to marinate, put another stack of burgers to thaw along with pork chops and a few more steaks. Plus we now had to make the house a bit more presentable - get some gnarly shit off the bomb shelter, mow, clean off the table, find chairs for outside and inside. Plus I had to make a second go 'round at the grocery store, because I didn't expect we would need anything on Friday except for a few staples. Basically this was a lightning round version of what we usually do for July 4th.

I wasn't exactly expecting everyone we invited to show up, but somehow the majority of them did. Interesting mix of folks, and everyone seems to have had a great time. Now they all think I'm a miracle worker for pulling a big dinner party out of my ass at a moment's notice. It was kinda funny when I'd come out of the house with yet another pile of meat and they'd ask "What are you cooking now?" Little did they realize that I was planning to cook an entire zoo's worth of critters. Everyone stuffed themselves silly, then had a nice long visit around the table. Surprisingly, everyone even stayed late, not leaving til about eleven.

The only bad thing was the damn flies. They were rampant because of the wet weather, and even more so because the field had just had a nice coating of manure. I'd originally planned a bunch of nice nibbly bits to put out so everyone could snack while I cooked, but the flies were so bad that we couldn't leave any food out on the table. Stupid insects. And of course they finally buzzed off just as it was getting dark and I finished up the last of the sausage on the grill. So instead of having nice picnic style snackies outside we ended up just piling it all on the table inside. There was so much food left over that I don't think I'll have to cook until... well, I get home from California.

P.S. (from da hubby, since he's reading this over my shoulder as I type) -
He did a fantastic job, he pulled it off super fantastic, and I love him with all my heart. What a varied group it was, and it came together so good.

Rain, for crying out loud!

It's been hot and stuffy all day. Not necessarily sticky, because it's not like it's baking hot. It's just that warmer than warm feeling that the humidity doesn't at all help with. The poor kitties outside are all panting. There's no sense in turning on the air conditioner because it would just add more moisture to the air. It needs to just go on and rain already!

September 06, 2007

It couldn't possibly be that easy

Big surprise, somehow we ended up getting screwed on the deal. It seems that the guy that was supposed to do the manure for us only managed to spread it on the 40 acre home place because, get this - he ran out of manure. How in the fuck do you run out of manure around here when there's like a dairy for every man, woman and child in the county? What, the cows are on strike and not shitting for a week?

It's not a crisis or anything, and we're only gonna have to pay for the smaller amount of cowshit flung here. I'm just irritated that we ended up getting shafted on the farm thing yet again. This farming shit sucks.

The smell of money

I ended up sleeping most of the day through, crashing a little before noon and waking up just as it was getting dark. Since the hubby called off work today due to urpiness, neither one of us had been out of the house. So I go outside to feed the cats and get the mail, and I notice that the usual funky dairy odor is a lot closer than usual today.

So now it's time to pray for rain, because with the nice layer of freshly spread manure it's time to get the place planted. We're hoping to make at least a regular crop next year, that way we can actually stay afloat for another year or so. But if it does rain, it is going to stink so bad. Ahh, country living.

Death and housework overload

The cats brought fleas into the house. This is due in part to the fact that the extra moisture this year makes everything alive extra prolific. It's ridiculous. And of course the little fuckers bite the shit out of me and barely even acknowledge the hubby. Today was bug bomb day - I had to go to Clovis to do the DVD exchange, so it was the perfect time to fill the house with poisonous gas. The little fuckers can choke on it!

So now the house has this slightly sticky feeling everywhere, and I have to wash everything. I mean, it's better than itching my ankles raw every day, but you just know that even in death those vampiric bastards had to get one in on me.

I hate bugs.

In need of an ark, potentially

The weather has been crazy. It's been full on wet this year. We're hoping to capitalize on the moisture by flinging dairy poo on the fields, but it's expensive.

Today it rained mad buckets. The hubby decided we needed to have Chinese buffet action after we observed a nice mellow bit of rain. Good grub, of course, and the manager (who is a total nut) insisted we try the whole flounder at a first try discount. Well worth it. Anyway, so on the way back home we notice this huge grey cucuiness and figure somebody is getting a heavy rain on. I open my fat mouth and say "I hope it's us." Well wouldn't you know it, I turn down our road and the clouds are pelting the shit out of us. It got so bad I had to keep it down to 30 and even pulled over once because I couldn't see. Ridiculous. Not that I'm complaining about the rainage, but it would be nice to not have an apocalypse while I'm on the road.

I think the cats are all freaked out now.

I am a melange of smoky aromas

It's a mix of mesquite barbecue goodness and sulfurous firework stank. I smell like Nightcrawler at a hoedown. The grub was great, of course, and the fireworks were bitchin' for having sat in the bomb shelter for a year. Of course one of the block deals had to go nuts and fall over, trying to shoot me and setting a couple little grass fires that I had to stomp out. Can't have a July 4th explode-fest without a little mishap. I couldn't set off every single one though - there are still six artillery shells left. I just don't have the fortitude to run away from them anymore. My legs are going to be so sore tomorrow.

I am so lame

I've been trying to come up with ways to use up the firecracker strings that we've had in the bomb shelter since last year. Normally I get the big brick of four 1000-stringers, but somehow I was stupid and got the brick with twenty 80-stringers. I'm too lazy to light off that many strings. So I put them in with the trash when I burn it, I put some in a paper bag and lit them, I'm trying to figure out how to string multiple strings together so they'll all go off at once.

I have three left, but it's too hot outside to light them off. And yet, I want to go and buy more. The little bit of poppage from an 80-string just doesn't quite make me giggle like one you could use as a scarf (if you were out of your damn mind).

Harvest

The weather tried to pull some shit on us again and fuck up the harvest action, but somehow it up and changed its mind. Yesterday they came and ran the combine over the home field, and apparently it was so good that they had to call in a truck to haul some of it away while they were harvesting. Now this isn't a big deal for most, but we only have 40 acres (minus the corner piece we live on) here to work with, and it's not irrigated. They should be harvesting the Ponderosa today, and the hubby is so excited that he wants to ride on the combine too.

I, however, do not. Farm equipment does not look like a fun ride to me. But I'm still thrilled at how well the harvest is coming along. Now of course a big chunk of it is already spent - planting, hail insurance, the harvesting itself, not to mention other expenses we need to take care of and the cost of doing this all over again. I don't know if we're going to have enough left over to buy a new lawnmower like he wants to, but even if we don't it's still a good year for us.

Eunuch

I had to take Weezer in to get fixed today. He hated being in the box - just wait til he finds out what happens when they let him out. I'll be picking him up on Thursday. I was good today and did not go to Alco to buy more stupid Pirates packs. I was tempted though.

Some good news

Mr. J, our friend from Farwell who had the heart attack, is doing better now. He's been moved to a rehab place where he's expected to be recovering for another month or so. That's pretty much it, just figured y'all would like to know.

The weather thing again

I woke up today at nine to the sound of hail and thunder pounding on the roof. It was all about the rain today, with three serious poundings of watery goodness. The hail made me a tad nervous, because that's no good for the crop, but other than that it's all good. We might actually harvest something worthwhile this year.

Various things happening

We'll start with the gloom report, because I'd like for there to be good news towards the end of this. I got a nice big jesus fix in today because we had to go to a funeral. The hubby's ex' mother died, rather out of the blue in fact, and we went to Portales today for the service. It was nice enough, but I'm not all that big on the churchy thing and there's always plenty of that around here. I'd only met her a couple times, much to my detriment because the woman was certainly a firecracker. The place was pretty crowded - a testament to how wonderful she was. We didn't stay long enough for the hubby to speak with the family; it's tax season and he can't exactly afford to hang around. I know when he gets a chance they'll talk on the phone.

And another death - our friend, who played Lucy to my hubby's Ethel a few years back at the Beast Western in Rialto, her mother was diagnosed with cancer recently and we got the call that she would be going quite soon. Turns out that the predicted week was rather optimistic and she's already gone. I don't believe we'll be able to make it to that funeral, unfortunately. I got to meet her when Lucy got married last year, and she was a sweet lady.

Oy, this year has been doom and gloom almost from the get-go. I'm getting a bit weary of this constant barrage of illness and death. It's everywhere! Seems every time I turn around something bad is happening to someone. So no more of it, please. I will now turn to the good news.

First off, our friend from Farwell is now out of the cardiac ward and in a place for extended care. Things are looking up, his wife his staying in a mobile home on the premises so she isn't too far away and also not paying outrageous hotel bills just for the privilege of being close to her loved one. We expect to be going out to Amarillo this Sunday to see her and give her a bit of relief.

And finally, to hopefully put a smile on your faces - our kitty Lila should be a mommy pretty soon. She's been doing that rolling around and trilling thing that kitties in heat always do. Weezer has been all over her - he's mounting her or sniffing at her nethers pretty much every opportunity he gets. I figure that she'll have her babies just a little after I've left for Faire (this always happens), so I won't get to see her pretty little kittens until I get home.

K', that's it for now.

So busted

I had intended to post about this some time ago, but there were timing issues. Not that it's all that important, but I just have to tell all y'all. The hubby - he cheated.

At cards, silly. Eeesh! We were playing Five Crowns the other night and he decided to peek at the top card on his last play before choosing the top discard instead. I mean full on too - it's not like he just flipped it over like I do when I'm taking the discard anyway, but I want to see what the top card would have been. No, he lifted it up a bit to peek at it and changed his mind. Right there in front of me, as if I wasn't paying attention. WTF is up with that?! And when I called him on it he acted all innocent, like I didn't watch him bend the card so he could see that it wasn't something he wanted.

CHEATER!

Amarillo

Well we drove on into Amarillo today for our second visit to our ill friend in the cardiac ward. Last week he was unconscious the entire time, and since then the reports have been pretty much all gloom. Today there was improvement though. He was awake (well, mostly awake) but groggy, and he's moving some. It isn't a giant improvement, but it's more improvement than we'd expected out of the day. The doctors are pleased that he's doing as well as he is - the prognosis wasn't entirely grim but they didn't want to give false hope either. We've got our fingers crossed.

More death, but good this time

So we've had this mouse in the house for a while now. It actually popped up on me when I opened one of the kitchen drawers about a week ago. Now I don't care for mousetraps (because we have cats) but once the little bugger comes after me it's all about the doom.

So here's your little moment of irony. The other day I'm getting food for the kitties and I notice that the bag is kinda heaving and flopping wrong. Well guess who decided to show his face at the entirely wrong time.

That little critter didn't have a chance. He hopped out of the bag, hit the floor, barely had a chance to squeak once before Lila was on him. She kicked his ass! I finally had to get hold of her and put her out because she kept letting it go and catching it again. She was so damn proud of herself. I went outside about 10 minutes later to let her in and give her a good kitty treat and she was tossing the dead thing around and batting at it like it was still alive. I finally had to get it away from her and throw it away so I could let her in.

February 09, 2007

The dark days continue

More bad news. I'm putting it behind the cut so you don't have to read it if you're having a sucky day.

Well, our friend in Farwell who fell on the ice at the office isn't doing well at all. He wasn't feeling too well afterwards (big surprise) and it turned out that he may have had a heart attack. Whether he did at the time is moot though, because his wife took him to Amarillo and while there he did indeed have one. They did the balloon bit to him, but he's still not feeling well. We're very worried about him.

Our neighbor is doing the chemo thing now. They had to take a lump out of his groin area - they found another one on his neck but it wasn't serious enough to remove and they're hoping the chemo will take care of it. He's going to be miserable, I know - a friend of mine back in the day had to do the chemotherapy bit and it was horrible. Hopefully our neighbor will pull out of it with only discomfort to bear.

And finally, our dog (well by now he was more the neighbor's dog) Oscar is dead. Now don't get all freaked, cuz our neighbor's son had to shoot him. Oscar was going blind, so blind in fact that he was running into cars. They figured this was much better than finding him splattered all over the road. (And believe me, we're surprised it didn't happen already, especially with the slick roads and big trucks.) We knew this was coming - he'd told us it would have to be done and we just told him to go ahead and let us know afterwards.

Now doesn't that just make your day feel special? Bleh, I think I'm going to glut myself on sugar now and pretend I didn't wake up.

The hubby lost his girlfriend

Yeah, and he wasn't all that happy about it either. So unhappy, in fact, that he couldn't stand to stay and watch her pack up and leave. It's not an entirely bad thing - she wasn't totally happy with the job there and it was a big source of stress for her. But now the hubby doesn't have his lunchtime friend to hang around with every day at work. This also means I get back into the habit of making him lunch again. He's too busy to really notice the difference right now, and by the time tax season is done he'll have gotten back into his old routine, but I know he's going to miss her terribly. At least they can still phone each other up every day when they feel like it.

Oh - and for those of you who don't get it (I hope there are few - none, in fact): I mean "girlfriend" in the fag-hag sense. Not that she's a hag exactly, but that's the closest translation I can get to work. I remember some time back chatting with someone in the #bearcave about the whole girlfriend thing, and for some demented reason he actually thought I meant that they were fucking. Duh!

On the farm

It snowed again, last night a bit and tonight a bit. It may snow more tonight. But really, I'm sure you're weary of the weather reports.

Lila's abscess came back and I had to take her to the vet to get lanced. She's back home already and entirely frisky for having a big wound on her shoulder. And once again she keeps trying to rub it on me all the time. Ew!

That's about it really. Not much in the way of excitement around here.

I'm not mean, but I'm not friendly either

The cattle have gotten used to me going out there a couple times a day to water them. A couple of them have gotten a bit brave and one of them is starting to act a little friendly. This must stop. I can't deal with friendly cattle, it's just too much trouble - especially now that there is snow for me to slip and fall in. They're still wary of me, and we're going to keep it that way. I may have to continue my snowball attacks to make them aware that I do not want to play with them.

Finally

It's snowing out there right now. Been snowing maybe an hour or so. It hasn't quite gotten up to an inch as yet, but I believe we'll be getting at least that. It's supposed to snow all weekend, in the 6" each day range. I'll believe it when I see it. But hey, at least it's actually snowing now.

I am so done with this weather

It's supposed to snow tonight. I had to go into town and get a sheep tank so the cattle will have water, because the hose on their regular tank decided to bust. Not that it matters, since the whole faucet is frozen, the tank is half full and most of that is ice, and chances are I'm going to have to go out there and make it stop spraying once it all thaws out. If I remember I'll take the phone out tomorrow and snap a pic so you can see what I mean.

Hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate HATE the cold!

It had better fucking snow. I am so tired of putting up with freezing hell with no precipitation reward for it. And stupid frost, no matter how pretty it freezes, does not count. Snow dammit!

It's so cold that when I went out to bust ice on the cattle tank, the spray from it that landed on my water resistant coveralls froze in a few seconds. I had little pebbles of ice clinging to me when I got back in the house. Pics behind the cutout.

That's not snow people, that's frost! It misted pretty much all day yesterday and quite a bit last night apparently, and all that froze on everything.

I was going to blog about the horrid icy sleetage from yesterday, complete with pictures. However, technology wasn't in a friendly mood so instead I'll report that we also got snow. It's about damn time too. I went out yesterday just briefly and there were little pellets of ice all over the ground. Icicles dripping off the eaves, slick ice on the road - yesterday was all about the icy cold. I did go out and snap a few pics with the camera, but when I tried to send them to myself so I could post them it gave me some pay up message. I don't know if I wanna waste $5 on picture sending just yet, so there is a chance that phone-cam'ing the blog may be on the outs.

But last night it was all windy and crazy with the thunder and now instead of just plain ice we have a thin layer of snow. I should be out back busting ice for the cattle. Bleh - I don't feel like bundling up and hauling ice out of the tank today. The kitties are well enough to go out for a bit today, so maybe I'll make them come out with me and 'help.'

At RAMs place

Had a nice weekend out, driving about 5 miles out to Mineral Wells to see RAM's new carpet. His place is looking real nice, he's got so much inside there fixed up. Did the usual pleasant visitation - played cards, they twisted off and I had a smoke, and driving around on a little errandage. He gave me a nice antique tin, which is now magneted to the shelf.

This weekend and next are the last real weekends left before tax season becomes prison, as the hubby calls it. We're already planning to drive down to Lamesa for xmas, and there is a chance that RAM may show up there then too. Yay happy holiday moments.

Okay, gonna bitch about it now

I have had it with the insanity of cold around here. There is still snow on the ground, though mostly dirty little drifts. Hey, weather - if you're gonna be so fucking cold all the time at least make with the more snow!

Spoke too soon

Yeah. So after I posted that little bit about how I wasn't going to complain about the snow I decide to get ready for bed. Fortunately I decided to pee first, because that's how I discovered that we didn't have water. Oy. Apparently the insane winds blowing the snow into pretty drifts were also blowing the snow into the cracks in the wellhouse and freezing up the pipes.

Cut to me and the hubby bundled up and shoveling fek snow up against the wellhouse wall, then plastering it up into the cracks to keep the wind out so that heat would build up in there and thaw the pipes out. Gotta love the country living.

Potential white xmas

It's snowing. Not like huge drifts or anything, but there is cold wet white stuff on the ground right now. Tomorrow is going to really suck for the hubby on his way to work. But I'm going to be good and not complain about it, because we really need any moisture we can get.

I just know I'm going to have to bust ice in the morning...

Tree

I should have dragged out the xmas boxes by now. I believe at one point I promised that I would have the tree up sometime right after T-day. However, chances are better than good that we'll be going down to Lamesa again for the holiday, so I don't see any point in putting the tree up. I mean, only 2 people are going to see it, and 1 of them doesn't care much.

I'm gonna do it anyway, eventually. The hubby really loves the whole tree thing and he hated it that I didn't put it up last year. Which I know I should have, but I just didn't want to drag anything out just to drag it back into the shop. That's pretty much how I feel this year, but I'll just have to get over it.

Not in the least bit unexpected change of plans

Okay, we're not hosting for Thanksgiving this year, we're going to be driving down to Lamesa. Which was the original plan, actually. I've already got a pie baked, 2 turkey breast roasts cooked and sliced, and the rest is pretty much heat and serve.

I'm already stuffed with pre T-day turkey scraps. Absolutely the best part about being the cook for any feast type holiday. I should go lie down.

Upgrades

The hubby couldn't stand it, he had to go ahead and get a couple things around here upgraded. Not that we really needed it, but it's nice. First off, we now have the next channel set up on the satellite. It's all about the gay channel, which I hardly watch (they repeat things a lot). But I think it's fantastic that I can watch Looney Tunes on Boomerang. Haven't seen a Bugs cartoon in far too long.

The second upgrade is to this machine right here. I am now out of the dialup stoneage and whizzing along in style on a nice fast wireless connection. The guys came in today to hook the antenna thing up.

Life's pretty good today.
